CCR Supports November Special Election

California Congress of Republican (CCR) Chairman Carl Burton said in a Tuesday statement to Sacramento Republicans that he supported Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s call for a November Special Election.

Mr. Burton was on the north steps of state capital building when Governor Schwarzenegger made his announcement calling for a special election on November 8th

“This is great news for hardworking California families who agree with the Governor that it's time to stop out-of-control spending, improve education and put the power of democracy back in the hands of the people," Burton stated.

Almost six months ago, the Governor asked the legislature to work with him to move California forward, but the Democrats in the state legislature failed to negotiate with the Governor to reach bi-partisan solutions on educational, financial and election reforms," he continued. "Last week the Democrat leadership in control of the state legislature proposed over $3 billion in tax increases this year." People complain about the cost of the election, but this election will cost only $1.25 for every Californian, that's a small price to pay to save the state billions of dollars while strengthening California’s future.

Burton further explained that Schwarzenegger's proposed initiatives will benefit everyone in the state.

First, the redistricting initiative would put the creation of electoral districts before an independent bi-partisan panel of retired judges "who will draw fair district lines," Burton continued.

This initiative will make the Legislature a more representative body of California citizens.  The initiative will require that districts be as compact, practical and conform to geographic boundaries.  To keep informed about the redistricting initiative visit www.fairdistricts.com

Second, the initiative to expand the time required for public school teachers to gain tenure would be raised from two to five years; this will help to ensure the highest quality teachers in our public schools.  “I know of no other job where a young person in their early 20s can get a job for life with just two years on the job” said Burton.

Third under the Governor’s spending plan spending would rise according to an average from the previous three years, which will “have the effect of flattening the government spending curve to help shield local governments and school districts from an unexpected shortfall during an economic downturn," he stated.

Burton, along with the rest of the California Congress of Republicans (www.ccrgop.org), is excited to support the initiatives that the Governor is bringing directly to the people since the Democrat controlled legislature failed to make the necessary reforms that will ensure a better future for California.
