California Congress of Republicans Supports Governor’s Reform Package

“The California Congress of Republicans (CCR) is on record supporting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reform package,” Carl Burton, President of the organization, said today at a news conference in Sacramento.

Joined by other Republican leaders from throughout the state, Burton said “California must live within its means and stop the out-of-control spending.  And the best way to make our legislators accountable to the people is to make them run for election in competitive districts; they shouldn’t be able to draw their own district lines and that’s why CCR supports Schwarzenegger’s and The People’s Advocate redistricting initiative.”

“Right now we are living under the worst redistricting plan ever in the state of California.  At least when it was just one party that drew the district lines there were some competitive districts but when both major political parties agreed to the present plan in 2001 they took away the power of the people to change their party in the state legislature and congress.”

Surrounded by other state wide Republican leaders, Burton said, “Kids come first in California and excellence must be the standard set for our students.  Right now teachers get a job for life after teaching for only two years; education reform is needed that would require them to teach for at least five years before receiving tenure.”
